I’m taking a class this semester at the U of Wy, where I also work. Employees can take one free class every semester, and this is a bonus I haven’t used in years. It’s a writer’s workshop in creative writing, with an emphasis on flash fiction. I haven’t dabbled much in flash fiction, too wedded, perhaps, to the idea that stories and novels need to be large and sprawling. One of the side effects of growing up on Stephen King novels, I guess!
I’m intrigued by what I can learn from this class. In my own writing I do like to get to the denouement as soon as possible, but also feel that I should expand on an interesting story or add more to characters and description and plot. Who knows, maybe this will open up a whole new writing path to me.
